Towards the end of the first lockdown, English multi-instrumentalist Redinho moved to a flat near London’s Holloway Road, an area that is just as mad as it is vibrant. The new neighborhood, rife with kicked-in doors, prompted the musician to join the Islington boxing club up the road. It also influenced a wave of manic, ebullient tracks created on an old Akai S3000XL sampler, a Tascam Portastudio recorder and a small handful of junky machines. The resulting album, 1-800-SUC-CESS, is assembled like a mixtape, complete with tape hiss and surrealist interludes.

When asked about the project, Redinho (né Tom Calvert) says the album is “about limitations, spontaneity and rawness. I found myself wanting to go back to older tech, even if it was as much of a pain as a joy to work with. I used old Akai samplers with floppy disks and recorded it all to cassette tape. Most of it was quite improvised.” Speaking on visual aspect of the album, Tom says: “the mania and aggression I felt living where I was seemed to be reflected in the videos I was making — a kind of informercial nightmare. The relentless selling of a material, financial or spiritual fix to the human condition. This projection of intense self improvement, whether through fitness, finance or psychological and spiritual mastery, seemed propelled by desperation. I could literally pause the clips I was watching and even though the people were selling happiness and success, they looked livid.”

Calvert’s musical output has covered an impressive range over close to fifteen years, with releases on Sub Pop and Numbers and collaborations with Riz Ahmed and Kimbra. But this album is intensely focused on one theme, one sound, and the world-building is impressive. With videos that connect multiple songs and a real sonic continuity, Redinho pulls us into a world of busted 80s synths, late night TV nonsense and paranoia.
